Dr. Gerald Roth served as Chief of the Section of Hematology at the Seattle VA Medical Center for over 30 years. He performed seminal studies showing that aspirin inhibits platelet function by acetylating the enzyme cyclooxygenase. He was the first to clone platelet glycoprotein IX alpha and characterize the Ib-V-IX receptor system of platelet adhesion. Dr. Roth also contributed to the cloning of thrombopoietin and the neutrophil alpha M adhesion receptor. In recognition of his contributions to our molecular and biochemical understanding of platelet function, he was elected to the  American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He was recipient of an Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association and served on the Editorial Board of Blood and Atherosclerosis Thrombosis Vascular Biology, NIH study sections, and ASH committees. Dr. Roth was mentor in biochemistry and molecular biology for post-doctoral fellows who went on to distinguished academic careers.
