Equity, diversity, and inclusion champions

  • Dr. Massiel Chavez-Stolla, an Assistant Professor in our Division, serves as the Hematology and Oncology Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Champion on the Department of Medicine Diversity Council. The Council was established in 2014 to represent both faculty and staff and to guide current priorities, which include promoting diversity in recruitment, increasing and retaining the number of underrepresented people in medicine (URiM), preparing URiM faculty/staff for future leadership roles, and establishing best practices and nurturing EDI committees and activities within the department as well as the division. This work is critically tied to one tenet of the DOM Strategic Plan: to nurture a supportive, collaborative culture where EDI is at the center.
  • Hematology and Oncology faculty are also active in many other diversity initiatives and councils including the LGBTQ+ Council and the Gender Equity Council.
  • Hematology and Oncology faculty host students in the NIDDK Short-Term Research Experience Program to Unlock Potential (STEP-UP). The goal of the STEP-UP program is to provide diverse high school students a research experience to encourage their interest in a career in science.

Women in Hematology  and Oncology

The Women in Hematology Working Group is a dedicated group of American Society of Hematology (ASH) members focused on the needs of women in hematology--recognizing the contributions of women to the field, providing networking and mentorship opportunities at all career levels, and enhancing ASH’s support of women in hematology. Current key priorities:

  • Offering career development learning opportunities
  • Fostering an intentional and supportive community
  • Providing scholarship pathways
  • Increasing female representation across the Society

The Women in Oncology blog provides a dedicated space to share challenges, insights, and best practices with regard to navigating careers, personal growth, and professional development. All American Society of Clinical Oncology members are encouraged to contribute; contact training@asco.org to write a guest post.
