RESEARCH AND/OR CLINICAL INTERESTS

Dr. Miller is passionate about using immune system-based therapies to improve the lives of her patients with skin, ocular melanoma, and kidney cancers. She started studying skin cancer in 2012, as part of her training to get both MD and PhD degrees at UW. At that time treatment for advanced Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare but aggressive skin cancer, was with chemotherapy which rarely worked long-term for patients. She was part of laboratory studies that showed patients with MCC were highly likely to benefit from a new type of therapy called “immunotherapy”, and subsequently helped with the first clinical trial of immunotherapy in MCC. Immunotherapy works very well for about half of patients with advanced MCC, and Dr. Miller now spends her time trying to find and study new treatments for the other half of MCC patients who still need better options. In addition, she does research on improving how immunotherapy works for patients with melanoma of the skin and eye (uveal melanoma). Dr. Miller loves how quickly we can implement new scientific discoveries for our patients in Oncology and particularly here at Fred Hutch, which can truly be life changing.
