Dr. Robert Witherspoon served as a clinician and clinical investigator for 37 years at the University of Washington and Fred Hutch, holding several administrative roles, including eight years as Medical Director for the Fred Hutch Transplant Clinic. His specialty was in providing cutting-edge for complex, sometimes very ill patients, in a research environment. His research interests centered around recovery of the immune system after allogeneic transplantation. In 2002 he received the Ali Al-Johani Award for Excellence in Patient Care.
