research and/or clinical career

Dr. Michael Linenberger was a huge contributor to hematology education and mentorship — locally by running the UW/Fred Hutch clinical fellowship program, first in hematology and then in hematology-oncology (2004-2023), and nationally as co-chair of the 2005 American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting education program. He also served as chair of the ASH Committee on Educational Affairs and chair of the ASH Nominating Committee. He was broadly known for encyclopedic knowledge of clinical hematology.

Dr. Linenberger was Medical Director of Apheresis and Cellular Therapy for Fred Hutch as well as for the Fred Hutch Cellular Processing Facility and the regional marrow-collection center for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), roles he held for more than two decades.  He was an inaugural member of the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB) Cellular Therapies Section, served on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Apheresis and in 2022, received the Presidential Award from that society for his career-long contributions. He held the Robert and Phyllis Henigson Endowed Chair in Hematology at UW, received the Al-Johani award for clinical excellence at Fred Hutch, and for many years, was recognized as a Top Doctor by Seattle Met and Seattle Magazine.
