research and/or clinical career

Dr. John Harlan was the Head of the Division of Hematology from 1989 to 2004, was the Clement A. Finch Endowed Professor of Hematology, and was the inaugural holder of the Elo Giblett Professorship of Hematology.

Dr. Harlan is noted for his work on leukocyte adherence to the endothelium. This mechanism is essential to host defense and injury repair. However, in some circumstances, this same process harms tissues and blood vessels. Harlan studied whether anti-adhesion therapies would prevent such damage without compromising normal immune response.

Dr. Harlan practiced at Harborview Medical Center, where his clinical interests included general hematology, blood cancers, thrombosis and hypercoagulability. He was also interested in global health and studied hematologic diseases in Africa.
