Dr. John Harlan served as Head of the Division of Hematology at the University of Washington (1989 to 2004), Hematology Fellowship Director, and Chief of Hematology-Oncology and Associate Medical Director at Harborview Medical Center. He received multiple UW Medicine awards, including endowed professorships, the Distinguished Patient Care Award, Fellows’ Choice Award, and the Dean’s Service Excellence Award. He was also the Seattle-side Program Director for the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program for East African physicians, a collaboration between FHCC Global Oncology and the Uganda Cancer Institute. Dr. Harlan published over 200 peer-reviewed articles in the fields of vascular biology and inflammation, including pioneering studies on leukocyte-endothelial adhesion receptors that helped to establish the biologic basis for new anti-inflammatory drugs. He was designated as a ‘Highly Cited’ researcher in Immunology and Medicine. He received the Clinician Scientist and Established Investigator Awards from the American Heart Association and was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the American Association of Physicians. He gave over 150 invited presentations at national and international meetings and mentored over 30 pre- and post-doctoral students in his laboratory.
