Research and/or clinical career

Over his career at University of Washington and Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC, n/k/a Bloodworks Northwest), Dr. Thomas Price held major leadership positions at PSBC, including Director of Apheresis, Director of the Cord Blood Program, Medical Director, and Chief Medical Officer.  He chaired two editions of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Standards for Bood Banks and Transfusion Services.  Dr. Price’s primary research focused on neutrophil kinetics, particularly the kinetics of granulocyte transfusion, establishing the role of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) in mobilization of neutrophils for apheresis and examining the efficacy of neutrophil transfusion in treating infections in neutropenic patients. He was President of American Society for Apheresis and later received the Presidential Award from that society. He subsequently served as President of the World Apheresis Association.  He was active in the National Marrow Donor program, serving on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Standards Advisory Group.  He was Chair of the Granulocyte Transfusion Study Subcommittee, NHLBI Transfusion Medicine/Hemostasis Clinical Trials Network.  He was a member of the HHS Advisory Council for Blood Stem Cell Transplantation.
