Dr. Arthur Thompson served as Head of Hematology at USPHS-Pacific Medical Center, Co-Founder/Director of the Washington State Hemophilia Care Program, member of National Hemophilia Foundation’s Medical and Scientific Advisory Board, and Director of Hemostasis Laboratories at Puget Sound Blood Center (n/k/a Bloodworks Northwest). His career focused on hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, relating basic research directly to the care of patients and their families. His research accomplishments included: the isolation and immunochemistry of human factor IX, the development of hFIX radio-immuno assays, genotyping and family studies of hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease, exploring FVIII B-cell and T-cell epitopes in hemophilic inhibitor patients, and collaborative contributions to developing gene therapy for hemophilia. He was elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation for his basic research on FIX. He served on advisory boards for the World Federation of Hemophilia, CDC, and NHLBI and chaired the Data and Safety Monitoring Boards of numerous pharmaceutical clinical trials in treating patients with congenital bleeding disorders.
